Walt Disney Pictures is planning to introduce Disney Digital 3D, a new three-dimensional viewing technology, when the studio releases "Chicken Little" this fall.
"Chicken Little," which is described as Disney's first in-house computer-animated feature (no Pixar required), will premiere on some 100 newly enhanced digital screens (as well as oodles of boring old screens) starting on Friday, Nov. 4. Dolby Laboratories is working with Disney to install Dolby Digital Systems in the 100 theaters, which will be limited to the Top-25 markets.
Also in on the action is Industrial Light & Magic, which will be rendering "Chicken Little" in 3D, using a new method of digitally produced 3D imagery. Viewers have been promised 3D glasses that offer greater clarity and comfort than previous models.
"We are pleased that 'Chicken Little' is the first animated movie to use our new process using Disney's actual 3D models, animation, and camera data," says ILM President Chrissie England. "This process allows us to provide a richer, more nuanced viewing experience for moviegoers than any existing postproduction techniques. We feel audiences will embrace this experience as the new standard in animated features."
Disney brags that this will be the first time a first time a major motion picture studio has fully embraced a digital deployment plan.
