The first full beta releases of MediaFrame for Mpeg-4 are now available for download, along with complete source code, sample implementation files and documentation.

MediaFrame is an Open Source streaming media platform in Java which provides a fast, easy to implement and extremely small applet that enables over 97% of web users to view audio/video content without having to rely on external player applications or bulky plug-ins. MediaFrame does not require special servers, software or programming knowledge.

This release is the culmination of four years steady development. New features include provision for AAC audio - the first time the codec has been ported to Java - alongside MP3 audio support, support for the existing MediaFrame DRM solution and an enhanced JavaScript API, which amongst other things, allows you trigger playback/time based events.

The technologies video scaling algorithm has also been enhanced, allowing a user to increase the size of the viewable screen by up to 600% that of the original movie file, all without a significant loss in quality.

Like the Mpeg-1 version before it, the core of MediaFrame for Mpeg-4 is extremely light weight at only 56kb, making it faster to initialise than both Real and Windows Media Player.

MediaFrame is released under the GPL and is available for Mpeg-1 & Mpeg-4 now. For more information:
